5-Day Great Migration Safari

The migration is not a place, so this itinerary does not name one. We put you where the herds are in the month you travel — calving grounds in February, the Grumeti in June, the Mara River from July.

Wildebeest crossing the Mara River in a dense column, dust rising off the far bank where a long line of safari vehicles waits and watches.

The itinerary, honestly described

Driving times are real, not optimistic.

  1. Day01

    Arusha to the herds

A long day, and worth it. We drive or fly — depending on where the herds are that month — and reach camp in time for an afternoon drive.

Drive or scheduled flightAfternoon game drive

  2. Day02

First full day on the move

Out at dawn and stay out. Where the herds are dense the whole day is spent reading the leading edge: wind, grass height, and which way the zebra are facing before the wildebeest commit.

    Dawn departureFull-day game drive

  3. Day03

    Predators

The migration draws everything that eats it. A day built around lion, hyena and — where the country opens out — cheetah on the short grass.

    Full-day game drivePacked lunch

  4. Day04

    Wherever it has gone

The herds move. So do we. This day is planned the night before, on the radio, with the other guides in the area.

    Flexible routingFull-day game drive

  5. Day05

    Last light, and home

A final dawn drive, then the road or the airstrip back to Arusha.

Game drive until 09:00Arusha by evening
