Why Maasai-guided
A hiring decision, not a theme.
Our guides grew up moving livestock through country where losing an animal to a lion is a household event. That produces a particular quality of attention.
Every guide holds current Tanzanian professional certification and a valid first-aid qualification, renewed annually at our cost. Most worked the northern circuit for a decade before joining us.
They are not cultural content on your itinerary. There is no dress-up and nothing staged. They are professional field guides who happen to be among the best-placed people in Tanzania to do this work.

- Reading the light, then positioning the car where the sighting will happen.

This month on the northern circuit
Where the herds usually are and what the parks are doing, month by month. Typical, never promised: the animals follow the rain and the rain moves.

The herds are usually spread across the southern short-grass plains around Ndutu, with calving beginning late in the month.

Calving typically peaks now, heavily synchronised, and the predators concentrate with it. The best month of the year for predator viewing.

Still the southern plains: calves on their feet, grass still green, and the long rains beginning to arrive towards the end of the month.

The long rains. Herds start moving north and west as the southern grazing is exhausted. The quietest, cheapest month, with a real chance of mud.

The rut, and columns moving through the central Serengeti towards the Western Corridor. Few vehicles, dramatic skies, some impassable tracks.

The dry season begins. Herds are typically in the Western Corridor around the Grumeti River; the crater and Tarangire come into their own.

July
Herds push into the northern Serengeti around Kogatende, and the first Mara River crossings usually happen. Peak season starts; camps fill.

The northern Serengeti and the Mara River, with crossings back and forth. The busiest month on the circuit, for good reason.

Still the north. Short grass, scarce water and concentrated game across the whole ecosystem — the easiest general viewing of the year.

The last of the Mara crossings, hot and dry everywhere, and Tarangire's elephants at their most concentrated along the river.

November
The short rains arrive and the herds usually begin moving south through the eastern Serengeti. Transitional, unpredictable and quiet.

Herds returning to the southern plains as they green up. Fresh grass, clear light after showers, and far fewer vehicles than in August.

On the second morning our guide stopped, pointed at nothing we could see, and said “wait.” Twenty minutes later a cheetah walked out of the grass with three cubs behind her.
We asked to swap a day and add a night. It was re-costed the same afternoon, with no fuss and no fee.
